What is an Apprenticeship?

Since 2016 young people aged 16 and 17 must, by law, stay in education.

An apprenticeship gives you the opportunity to gain practical work experience, knowledge, skills, and behaviours for your chosen job role; skills that are recognised by industry employers all over the country. It is a work-based training course, where you will earn while you learn.

Is an Apprenticeship full time, like College?

Yes. To undertake an apprenticeship, you’ll need to be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week. You’ll be learning on the job. There are no course fees, no day release to College and you’ll earn a wage whilst training.

If I’m working full time, how will I be taught and trained?

Throughout the Apprenticeship, you’ll be supported, coached and mentored by an experienced Trainer-Coach. They’ll meet with you and your employer to agree on your Individual Training and Learning Plan (ITLP). This is to outline programme content, methods of teaching, training and learning targets, any support you might need and a monthly visiting schedule.

Will I be paid, and how much?

Yes. As an employed member of staff, you will be paid the minimum apprenticeship wage of £3.50 per hour. The minimum wage will increase to £3.70 per hour from April 2018.

Can I apply while I’m still in School?

Yes, but we advise that you call us to apply a month before you finish school. We cannot guarantee that the vacancies we have online will still be available when they have finished school.

What else will I receive from doing the Apprenticeship?

You will leave with a solid CV fit for the industry, transferable skills, and confidence in conducting an interview, feedback and a reference given by the employer. You will be much stronger as a candidate as a result of the apprenticeship.

In summary, as an Apprentice:

• You’ll be an employed member of staff.
• You’ll have an employment contract outlining your wages and holiday allowance.
• You’ll be part of a Government-funded and recognised educational programme.
• You’ll receive training on the job to ensure that you meet the requirements of the Apprenticeship Standards.
• You’ll complete coursework assignments to show your knowledge and understanding.
• You’ll gain industry experience and skills making you more employable.
